The Gibb River Road

The Gibb River RoadThe Gibb River Road spans some 670kms from Derby to the Junction of the Great Northern Highway between Wyndham and Kunanurra. The Kalumburu Road links the Kalumburu Community with the outside world and spans 260kms of rough road from the Gibb River Road, past Mitchell Plateau to the coast at Kalumburu. Although many visitors travel the Gibb River and Kalumburu Roads to experience the Outback Kimberley, they are still primarily in cattle country and must be aware of cattle and road trains. Travel along these roads during the tropical summer, December to April, is NOT RECOMMENDED.

The Mitchell Plateau is an area of significant Aboriginal heritage. All Aboriginal sites are protected and it is forbidden to touch the artwork or damage it in any way. The palm, Livistonia Eastonii, is the most striking feature of the plateau and grows among the open eucalypt forest. Access is very rough with steep inclines and a 4X4 vehicle is essential. The final section of road to the Mitchell Falls is extremely steep and narrow

The Mitchell Falls Walk is over rough terrain and caution should be taken near cliffs with sheer drops. Plenty of water is essential to avoid dehydration. The first falls are Merton Falls and Mitchell Falls follows after crossing a saddle of country at the head of a very steep sided gorge. It is necessary to cross the river and walk along the gorge to look back on the falls. Do not swim below the falls due to the presence of saltwater crocodiles.

A helicopter is usually located at the Carpark offering short scenic flights over these magnificent falls.
