Albany to Esperance

A short distance east of Denmark is Albany, Western Australia's first settlement and one of the State's leading holiday centres. An historic maritime city with a quaint English ambience, it has old buildings, museums and a rugged coastline to take your breath away. Albany was once a major centre for whaling and you can still see relics of its whaling past. These days, whale watching has taken over and if you visit between July and November, you may be lucky enough to encounter a southern right whale during migration.

Located 50km north of Albany is the Porongurup Range, offering karri forest bushwalks on the upper slopes and wineries on the lower slopes. The neighbouring Stirling Range rises dramatically from the coastal farmlands and is marked with well signed tracks popular with bushwalkers. In spring the slopes are ablaze with wildflowers and you can spot native animals in their natural habitat. If you're feeling fit, you can climb the largest peak, Bluff Knoll.

There are more natural wonders further along the south coast in and around Esperance, the home of flawless white sandy beaches, massive granite headlands and islands sparkling in the sun. Coastal drives offer impressive scenery, especially Cape Le Grand National Park.

There are lots of wonderful places to see down south. So whatever you do, don't miss Western Australia's Southern Wonders!
