the Swan Valley
Another pleasant day trip is the Swan Valley, one of Western Australia's premium winegrowing regions. You can taste export-quality wines and gourmet cuisine, go gallery-browsing and see quaint old buildings dating back to colonial days. Yanchep, 51km north of Perth, is also great for day trippers, with sandy beaches, top fishing and a national park which is home to a host of native animals.
Make the climb into the Darling Range east of Perth and the suburbs give way to the rolling bushland, orchards and semi-rural villages of the Hills and Armadale areas. Don't forget to look back towards the city for a spectacular skyline view. There are plenty of picnic spots in the jarrah forests of the Darling Scarp, plus lots of galleries, wineries and heritage buildings to explore. In spring, the wildflowers are a delight.
Whatever your idea of fun, you'll find it in and around Perth.
