Fremantle & Rottnest Island

Fremantle, Perth's cosmopolitan port city, is another waterfront highlight, located just 19km from the centre of the capital at the mouth of the Swan River. World renowned for its 19th century heritage architecture, Fremantle fairly buzzes with outdoor cafes, harbourside restaurants, old pubs, buskers, museums, markets and galleries. For the price of a cappuccino or locally-brewed beer, you can sit on the sidewalk and watch the street theatre which passes for daily life in Freo.

Beyond Fremantle Harbour is Rottnest Island, a playground just a short ferry or plane ride off the coast. Rotto, as the locals call it, is a haven of crystal clear bays and secluded beaches for swimming, snorkelling, windsurfing, skindiving, surfing, boating and fishing. You can tour the island by coach, ride a Rottnest railway or hire a bike and do your own thing. Watch out for the quokkas, the small marsupials which inhabit the island.
