Mt Augustus & Gascoyne Junction
A trip into the inland Gascoyne is an essential part of any visit to this region. One of the most popular destinations is the Mt Augustus National Park, 460km east of Carnarvon. The world's largest monocline, Mt Augustus is twice the size of Ayers Rock! You will be able to see fascinating geological formations such as the Kennedy Ranges, Aboriginal rock paintings and engravings and a wealth of animal and bird life.
To get to Mt Augustus most people will travel through Gascoyne Junction, where a typical outback pub serves as a social centre not only for the town, but for the people who work on isolated pastoral stations throughout the region. Station stays are now growing in popularity as they offer visitors the opportunity to appreciate geniune country hospitality, see the countryside through the eyes of the locals who in many cases have grown up on the land and to experience day to day life on an outback sheep and cattle station.
There are several routes which can be taken to experience the outback Gascoyne depending on what you want to see and it is possible to undertake a circuit rather than having to retrace your steps. Always remember, however, you will need to carry plenty of water, extra fuel and emergency rations. Get full details of road conditions and information about where you are going before commencing your journey.
