Yarrawonga, Mulwala

Yarrawonga, MulwalaIn the midst of one of the world's driest countries the expanse of Lake Mulwala seizes the eyes and stays in the memory. Fifteen kilometres long and enclosing 6,000 hectares, it is a tribute to the far-sighted community of Yarrawonga and Mulwala.

The lake at Yarrawonga weir has a host of exciting activities on offer such as waterskiing, cruise boats which are a major drawcard, swimming in the three pools in the lake as well as an Olympic pool and excellent fishing for the keen angler. The lake also teems with a multitude of wondrous bird life such as cockatoos, galahs, water birds and thornbills. At the eastern end of the lake is the haunting sight of the ghosts of gum trees, some of them 600 years old which break up the waves, prevent erosion and provide shelter for fish and bird life.

For many the district is a chance to relive the deepest Australian experience of camping amid the red gums along the Murray bends where bush camping is allowed. There is a chance to observe how life was in the timeless past. In a protected but accessible area is a Koori Boat Rock, a cleverly constructed hole to store water during the hot summers.

For the eco-tourist the area is a combination of old and new, a place to explore on foot or gently move among the red gums on horseback.. Take a picnic or visit one of the many great eating places in the area.

You can play golf on Australia's largest golf course, the Yarrawonga and Border Golf Club, enlarged with the planning advice of Peter Thompson and Mike Wolveridge. And don't forget the festivals such as the Rockalonga in January, the Burramine Gift in March, the Yarrawonga Show in October and in November, the Great Inland Boat and Leisure Show.

Bring your sun cream. There are 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. More than the Gold Coast and even equal to the sunshine hours of Darwin.
