Colac & Camperdown
Wetlands, lakes and volcanic plains are fascinating aspects of the Great Ocean Road hinterland. You can discover these treasures, and more, leisurely touring the region. Explore the many towns including Colac, Birregurra, Camperdown, Timboon and Simpson. Each has a different array of attractions and offers visitors a variety of scenic views and recreational pursuits.
Colac, the major centre of the hinterland region, is close to the Otway Ranges foothills and on the shores of Lake Colac. Other significant towns include Camperdown, Cobden, Timboon and Terang.
Historic Camperdown, centre of a rich farming district, has a number of century-old buildings, including the huge central clocktower. Nearby, the volcanic plains contain important lakes and birdlife, Australia's largest saltwater lake and the country's youngest extinct volcano. Fresh produce is a specialty of the hinterland and you can sample your way from Timboon Farmhouse cheeses to pick-your-own berry farms.
