Nelson & Casterton

Nelson & CastertonAt Nelson, the picturesque Glenelg River is the centrepiece of many activities, including swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing or bird-watching. Many visitors like to experience the brilliant sunrises while paddling a canoe on the river. Or you can take a cruise or holiday on a houseboat.

The river flows through the Lower Glenelg National Park, just north of Nelson, on its 400km journey to the sea from the Grampians. A huge gorge is one of the many highlights of a park visit. The park contains more than 700 species of native plants and many native animals, including kangaroos, possums, koalas and echidnas. Subterranean secrets are revealed in the Princess Margaret Rose Cave which was first explored about 60 years ago. Thousands of years of water dripping through limestone have produced a wondrous underground landscape. You can take a guided tour.

Historic Casterton, nestled on the banks of the Glenelg River, is a vibrant farming based community. There are many attractions to fascinate and entertain visitors, including Warrock Homestead. The National Trust has given this 1843 property an A classification.

Bushwalks or four-wheel drives will allow you to explore the abundance of natural attractions around Casterton.
