Geelong

GeelongGeelong, Victoria's largest regional city, is a bayside metropolis of contrasts, with fine examples of the city's colonial past complementing the contemporary. As the eastern gateway to the Great Ocean Road, Geelong is often the first port of call for travellers. And there is plenty to experience.

You can take a walk through beautiful old National Trust homes, or explore the vibrant shopping centres in the city and suburbs. The fully restored art deco Eastern Beach swimming pool complex, with its backdrop of sandy beaches, terraced, manicured lawns and large, shady trees, is a popular destination.

Geelong's many restaurants, cafes, bistros and pubs serve a varied fare, with some offering fine views over Corio Bay as an accompaniment. The nightlife is as lively as you want it to be. Rage at a disco, take in a movie or enjoy live theatre or a concert at the Performing Arts Centre or The Great Hall at Deakin University.

You'll discover the works of some of Australia's best artists hanging in the Geelong Art Gallery. At the National Wool Museum, the spotlight is on Australia's most famous pastoral industry. And the city's enduring links with the sea are showcased at the Maritime Museum.

Geelong is well endowed with parks, gardens, recreation areas and walking and cycling tracks. Wild white water cascading over Buckley Falls is a highlight of a visit to the Barwon Valley, just on the outskirts of the city. Walking tracks and viewing platforms allow you to get close to nature along this stretch of the Barwon River. Rich soil and an ideal climate have fostered a resurgence in wine-making in the region. Many wineries offer tastings and sales from the cellar door.
