Maldon
The origins of the term goldrush become appraent when you know Maldon's history. When gold was discovered in 1853, there was a race for riches as 20,000 diggers rushed to the fields. But, just as quickly as they came, they departed and by the following year, only 2,000 remained. Companies took over and briefly Maldon prospered as one of the world's richest goldbearing quartz reefs. This too petered out and Maldon's development slowed.
The result of these events means visitors today can experience a historic town, seemingly untouched by the 20th century. Abandoned mines are scattered around the town so look for names like Lady Darling Beehive, New Chum and Derby Hill. Take the candlelight tour of Carman's Tunnel to witness first hand the intricacies of a gold mine.
Transport options contribute to the uniqueness of Maldon; take a Steam Train Ride, hitch a lift with Terry and Tangles, two obliging Clydesdales, or go on foot for a 45 minute stroll as you take the Historic Town Walk. Well preserved architecture ranging from miner's cottages to the grander public buildings like the Museum (1859) add to Maldon's appeal. Spend an afternoon browsing for hidden treasures in the gift, souvenir and antique shops. Maldon is indeed a step back in time and its own piece of history.
