Castlemaine

CastlemainePerhaps just as famous for its Castlemaine XXXX beer, first brewed during the gold rush, Castlemaine is a typical goldfields town with many fine building. The famous Castlemaine Rock confectionary factory still produces sweets to the original recipe first used in 1853. The Castlemaine Market Hall (1862), a great example of the architecture of the time, provides visitors with an audio-visual display of Castlemaine's history.

Stroll through town and absorb the 19th century building styles in the many hotels, banks and churches. The Art Gallery and Historical Museum has a fine collection of Australian art and artefacts. The Old Castlemaine Gaol has recently been renovated; the views of Castlemaine from Gaol Hill are stunning. A visit to Budah Historic Home and Garden will delight, with its exceptional collection of art, crafts and historical material relating to the goldfield's silversmith, Ernest Leviny and his family's 120 year history.

Castlemaine abounds with gardens and parks. The Botanic Gardens, Kalimna Park and Kaweka Park are ideal picnic spots. Inspect remnants of gold rush days in the Castlemaine Stae Forest. Here the stone abutments that supported the giant Garfield Water Wheel used to power the Garfield Mine Battery still exist.

Nearby, at Chewton, meet our national dog at the Dingo Farm. Spend some time listening to some of the history of the area and the dogs, visit the Wattle Gully Goldmine or enjoy a heritage walk along the Chewton main street.

The Castlemaine State Festival, held in November, is a celebration of music and visual arts. In alternate years, the Festival of Gardens offers much to the garden lover with exhibitions, displays, demonstrations and field trips. Castlemaine and the surrounding region with its many attractions, including the Great Dividing Walking Trail from Castlemaine to Daylesford, plus excellent local wineries, fine restaurants and accommodation, must be part of your Goldfields tour.
