Maryborough

MaryboroughJust 75 kms from Ballarat is the city with a heart of gold, Maryborough. If it's spring, you're just in time for the famous Wattle Festival. If you have practised and have your gumleaf handy, enter the Australian Gumleaf Playing Championships. If not, there is still the opportunity to indulge in some of the many other attractions of Maryborough. Your first stop could be the Railway Station. Fully restored and deemed one of the finest in Victoria, it now houses a restaurant, cafe, antique centre, galleries and Tourist Information Centre. Don't miss the Museum Complex with a large collection of diverse equipment and items related to the history of the city.

Like all Goldfield's cities and towns, Maryborough too boasts an golden past. Discovery of the precious metal at nearby White Hills in 1854 resulted in an influx of 25,000 eager diggers. In the early 1900s, gold production declined and secondary industries mushroomed and, today, they assist to support a population of 8,000. Grand buildings, historic cottages and gracious homes, complimented by beautiful public gardens, give an insight into Maryborough's past. The town's restaurants and accommodation provide a link to the fine wines of the Pyrenees. Take time to meander through country roads and forests.

Within a 20 km radius of Maryborough are the towns of Dunolly, Carisbrook, Marjorca, Moonlight and Alma, each with their own colourful story to tell.
