Clunes
A short distance from Creswick, Clunes has etched its place in history as the sight where in 1851 the first gold discovery was made. James Esmond was rewarded for this event and you too will be rewarded by a visit here. Today's prospector will find richness in the town's verandahed streets, blustone churches and architecture of the time when the population of the area peaked at 100,000. Attractions include the Historic Museum, Bottle Museum and view the Port Phillip Mine site where most of the gold was mined.
The regions surrounding Clunes offers much to the visitor. Anderson's Mill at Smeaton was built in 1861 and is now being restored. Australasia Mine, site of a mining disaster in 1882, where 22 men drowned, is open to the public.
