Golden Triangle
Welcome Stranger, the largest gold nugget discovered in the world, was found at Moliagul, near Dunolly, in 1869. Even today valuable nuggets are still being unearthed so a visit here could be more rewarding than you ever imagined. The Triange is bordered by the towns of Wedderburn to the north, Dunolly to the south and Inglewood to the east and has contributed 90% of the world's largest nuggets. To find your pot of gold, hire a metal detector in Dunolly where good size nuggets have been found by modern day prospectors.
Close by, Laanecoorie Weir, built in 1891 is a popular fishing, boating and skiing spot. Camp out and cook your catch on an open fire. Wedderburn, at the top end of the triangle, boasts one of the few working goldmines in Victoria.
