Mt Macedon
Mt Macedon has always been a popular woodland retreat. The cool climate and rich volcanic soils have attracted many famous gardeners and the mountain's grand homes and lush grounds are testimony to their success. The peak of Mt Macedon is the ideal vantage point from which to view the region's stunning features. Gaze over lush plains towards the sparkling bay; picturesque towns dot the foreground and the distant peaks of the You Yangs break the horizon.
Around Mt Macedon, over 20km of walking track winds through pretty bush, bursting with wildlife. Pay a visit to the 157 bird species, from rosellas to wrens, and the wallabies, echidnas and over twenty other mammals that live here.
A rich and rewarding world, just 65km north-west of Melbourneon the Calder Freeway, Mt Macedon is well within reach for the day, a week or more. Just over the Camel's Hump lies the pretty hamlet of Hesket and the enigmatic Hanging Rock looms on the horizon.
