Blackwood
Deep within the Wombat State Forest on the upper reaches of the Lerderderg River, Blackwood holds many attractions. From this lovely hideaway you can bushwalk, swim, climb, pan for gold or fish for trout - fresh mountain air, heavily scented with eucalyptus, is guaranteed to blow away the cobwebs.
Over 13,000 hopeful prospectors descended on Blackwood in March, 1856. Today, visitors continue to arrive - some still try their luck in the gullies and creeks around the town, where flecks of gold remain.
With their unusual Edwardian-style rotundas, Blackwood's mineral springs attract many. The energetic may even consider a walk to nearby Tipperary Point and Sweets Lookout.
