Naracoorte

NaracoorteNaracoorte, found mid-way between Adelaide and Melbourne is a country town with much charm, many attractions for the visitor and a history of settlement dating back to the 1840s. The Sheep's Back Museum gives some idea of Naracoorte's wool-growing past, and no visitor should miss it. The heart of the town is open and inviting, with tall trees and lush, green lawns. Relax there or cross to one of the excellent shops that line the streets. Explore the side lanes and find coffee shops serving tempting, home-baked country food.

Visitors may park down by the Naracoorte Creek in the shade of the splendid old gum trees. Take a stroll along the banks, and listen to the sound of birds in the trees. The surrounding countryside is lovely. Experience the real feel of the South East; green paddocks canopied by huge red gums, their spreading branches reflected in the still swamps that spread across the land. The whole area is rich in wildlife, from the myriads of water birds on the swamps and lagoons of the region to the creatures of the night; possums, gliders and other small native animals The Aboriginal people called the area Naracoorte, the land of running water, and the good rainfall would have been one of the principle reasons for settlement by Europeans.

In the World Heritage listed area12kms south of Naracoorte there are about 60 known caves over a range of some 23kms. Guided tours are available, and there are also novice and adventure tours in those caves without lighting and guide paths. One of the sights not to be missed is that of thousands of bats leaving the Bat Cave at dusk on their evening hunt for insects. The Victoria Fossil Cave contains unique deposits of bones buried layer on layer to show modern scientists the evolution of life in this fertile region.
