Blackall Ranges in Queensland's Sunshine Coast
Just behind Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast lies the Blackall Range. Formed by ancient, basaltic lava flows, the rich, red soils of the Range are now covered by a patchwork of rolling green pastures and dense rainforest. Not so long ago, the Aborigines of the Kabi Tribe gathered together every two or three years on the banks of the Obi Obi at Baroon Pocket to feast on the fruit of the Bunya Pine. It was a place of enrichment and celebration for the Kabi Kabi; a place to exchange songs, stories, tools and ornaments.
With the arrival of the timbergetters, dairy farmers and fruitgrowers, much of the original forest was cleared beginning the settlement of small towns along the crest of the Range - Maleny, Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton.
To the east from the road along the escarpment, is a panoramic vista of the Pacific Ocean, the beaches and the towns of the Coastal Plain - stunning at any time of the day or night. To the west is the Mary River Valley and the distant wild and majestic ranges of the Conondale National Park. To the south from Mountain View Road, are the monolithic peaks of the Glass House Mountains.
Within easy driving distance of Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast Beaches, the Blackall Ranges is a place to escape city life and experience the tranquility of nature and the welcome of country hospitality. It is an enchanting destination for holidaymakers, enticing them to return again and again.
