Sarina
About 37 kilometres south of Mackay is Sarina, a town of some 3,500 people nestled into the foothills of the Connors Range. Sarina is the second city of the Mackay region, a busy economic and sugar centre. On Sarina's doorstep are many unspoiled beaches which provide sheltered swimming, sailing, waterskiing and fishing as well as sweeping views of the surrounding coastline from selected lookouts. Popular beaches include Sarina, Grasstree, Armstrong, Campwin, Salonika and Freshwater Point.
The largest coal exporting facility in the Southern Hemisphere is at Hay Point. Two huge wharves load bulk carriers continuously. Often, half a dozen of these ocean going giants can be seen, waiting to come to the wharves for loading. Coal coming by huge electric trains from the mines of Mackay for loading at both Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay.
The Sarina district is popular with anglers. Local creeks teem with estuarine marine life including flathead, whiting, bream, grunter, salmon and estuary cod. In season, mud crabs and prawns are plentiful. West of Sarina in the hinterland lies Middle Creek Dam, a peaceful spot for waterskiing and picnics. Southwest from Sarina are the Koumala Ranges from where you will see spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
In the southeast region of the shire lies Cape Palmerston National Park, an area of breathtaking views, melaleuca forests, abundant bird life and excellent fishing grounds. Permits can be obtained from the National Parks and Wildlife Service in Mackay. Isolated beaches and native wildlife make this park a photographer's dream. The park is four-wheel drive access only.
