Natural Attractions

Natural AttractionsTravel north from the City of Mackay through a cradle of fertile sugar fields to the gentle village of Seaforth, coloured with tropical hues of frangipani and poinciana. Here the peace and tranquility of the region's seaside towns draw thousands of visitors wanting to escape the bustle of city life.

Where Eungella rears into the clouds, Cape Hillsborough spans rocky headlands down to the inter-tidal zone. The park, 50 kilometres north of Mackay, features stands of Hoop Pine, granite headlands, coastal rainforest, mangroves and sandy beaches. There's an interesting short walk at Hidden Valley, taking in coastal vistas with views of mangroves growing in the rocky foreshore. A low tide, the remains of an Aboriginal fish trap can be seen on this walk. The walk ends in a circuit through a triking stand of rainforest

The wildlife in and around Mackay is bountiful - you can sit at the Eimeo Hotel and watch dolphins frolic off the Point ... take a Roylen's cruise in whale season or watch the turtles nesting on Mackay's surrounding beaches. The Mackay Region is surrounded by a range of natural environments as diverse as they are beautiful - whatever you do during your stay, make sure you don't leave Mackay without visiting our elusive platypus!

Generous parkland and recreation areas have been developed in the Mackay region for family recreation and environmental conservation. Queens Park has an orchid house, manicured lawns and magnificent palms. Caneland Park is on the banks of the Pioneer River. Many festivals are held here throughout the year and the park's sound shell allows the area to be used as an entertainment venue. The John Breen Park is in North Mackay and is a tranquil family picnic area.

Take the kids to Illawong Fauna Sanctuary, Whitsunday Waterworld or spend a day at Mulherin Park Harbour Beach. The children will be happily entertained feeding kangaroos, playing on the waterslides or visiting the replica of Fred Flintstone.
