The Gold Coast - Surfers Paradise Where else in the world can you find a City that boasts 55km of golden sandy beaches, hectares of lush tropical rainforests, beautiful mountain ranges and spectacular waterways? What city offers thrill seekers a number of exciting theme parks, a range of sporting and recreational actvities and world class events including the Australian Indy Car Grand Prix, the Gold Coast Marathon and the National Surf Life Saving Championships?

Boasting a resident population of approximately 340,000 with an annual growth rate of four percent, the City of Gold Coast accommodates 1/6th of the population of South East Queensland and its population is increasing rapidly. The City is forescasting to grow to 470,000 by 2006.

Located 30km south of the Brisbane River is Beeleigh, the northern gateway to the City of Gold Coast and home to Australia's oldest operating rum distillery, operating since 1860. The Gold Coast rests in the south of Coolangatta, on the beautiful Queensland - New South Wales border. In the east, Gold Coast residents and visitors enjoy some of the most spectacular beaches in the world, while the City's western boundary provides many breathtaking bushwalks and picnic spots in the tranquil Gold Coast Hinterland.

In addition to its ever growing resident population, the City also welcomes in excess of three and a half million tourists every year and is the venue for a number of world class events. Other favourite past times of Gold Coast visitors include dining out at many of the Coast's first class restaurants or cafes; a fun day out at one of several theme parks and tourist attractions; having a flutter at Jupiters Casino or shopping their days away at one of the many comprehensive shopping centres at Broadbeach, Southport and, of course, Surfers Paradise which is a mecca for bargain hunters.

For the many sun lovers, the Gold Coast City Council employs 23 permanent and 60 seasonal lifeguards to patrol 17 of the Gold Coast's beaches every day of the year. During the school holiday periods a total of 30 beaches are patrolled to ensure the safety of beachgoers. Every water-based activity can be enjoyed at any of the Gold Coast's fabulous beaches including Kirra, Bilinga, Currumbin, Palm Beach, Tallebudgera, Burleigh Heads, Miami, Mermaid and Main Beaches. Surfing is escpecially popular as is swimming, sailboarding, boating, fishing or simply relaxing and soaking up the brilliant sunshine.
