Boyne Island & Tannum Sands
Nestled in the delta of the picturesque Boyne River, Boyne Island is linked by bridge to its twin community Tannum Sands. Boyne Island is renowned for its beautiful foreshore parks while Tannum Sands, just 10kms off the Bruce Highway by sealed road, offers long stretches of sandy beaches for swimming and coastal recreation. Lifesaver patrols each weekend and all summer holidays adds to the safe relaxed holiday atmosphere. With only a small variance in temperature from winter to summer, the water is warm enough to swim all year long. Tannum Sands and Boyne Island are linked by over 15kms of pedestrian and cycle paths which wind alongside the Boyne River, through parks and to the beachfront. The scenic walk/cycle track, known as Turtle Way, will eventually link all parks along the entire foreshore area. Canoe Point overlooks a sheltered cove with a park area offering modern picnic facilities. Located on Boyne Island, just outside the township, Boyne Smelters produce aluminium for markets throughout the world. A visitor information centre operates at the smelter where a video of the smelting process can be viewed as well as a display of brochure material. Tours through the facility are also available. Wild Cattle Island, a National Park, can be explored at low tide - this is a sand dune island accessed by foot at low tide as no four wheel drive vehicles are permitted.
Boyne Island beaches and the Boyne River mouth offer an alternative fishing and swimming area to the popular main beach at Tannum Sands. Motels, caravan parks and holiday units are available at Boyne Island and Tannum Sands. Together with access to a variety of shops, including a multi-tenancy shopping complex, golf, other sporting facilities, beach and fishing access combine to offer an atmosphere of easy living and unspoiled scenery. Information can be obtained from the local information centre in Tannum Sands. For the convenience of visitors and residents alike, the Boyne Island and Tannum Sands townships support a range of shopping opportunities. A major supermarket is on hand and a number of convenience stores and specialty shops are located throughout the area. Accommodation needs are met with motels, caravan parks and holiday units readily available to offer visitors any number of options.
