Kuranda
There are three spectacular ways to visit Kuranda, the village in the rainforest high above the coast north-west of Cairns. The historic railway train climbs through tunnels, across bridged ravines, past waterfalls and stops at Barron Falls on its way to the much photographed Kuranda Railway Station. The road winds up the mountain with views of the coast from a lookout and gaps in the rainforest. The Skyrail cableway passengers overlook superb coastal and tableland panoramas and can gaze deep into the forest floor as they glide just above tree level, making two stops in the rainforest including a walk to Barron Falls and a visit to an interpretive centre.
Upon arrival, you'll discover that Kuranda is a postcard village of shady trees, an old timber church and houses, pubs, shops and galleries. There are plenty of places for leisurely dining or a simple quick snack. The country-style market stalls are terraced among the trees and showcase local products from didgeridoos and damper to art, craft and fashions. The covered market includes a cultural theatre, free entertainment by buskers and bungy jumpers and a walk-through aviary where birds from the world's rainforests share food, trees and often a perch on visitors' hats.
Nearby is Australia's biggest butterfly display where Cairns Birdwings, brilliant blue Ulysses and Red Lace Wings flash their presence as the smaller or well-camouflaged species feed on the flowers and in the trees. In a noctarium, the rainforest's reclusive night feeders can be seen in their natural habitat.
Indigenous culture, legends and lifestyle are the village's main attractions. An internationally famous Aboriginal dance troupe performs in its own theatre and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders show their ancient skills in a forest amphitheatre just minutes from the village. A cruise boat and a guided forest walk leave from the banks of the Barron River and canoes can be hired by those wishing to explore at their own pace. A short drive from the village are the spectacular Barron Falls - a majestic sight during the summer monsoon season - a rainforest resort and a jungle tour by amphibious army duck.
