Turkey Beach, Bororen & Miriam Vale
Turkey Beach is closer to the Great Barrier Reef than virtually anywhere in Queensland and protected Rodds Harbour is a fisherman's paradise laying claim to some of the best mud crab areas in the country. The name comes from the bustard or scrub turkey shot by Captain Cok's crew back in 1770. The turnoff to Turkey Beach is 10 kilometres north of Bororen on the Bruce Highway then 24 kilometres inon a good gravel road. No camping is allowed, however accommodation is available.
Boat in from Turkey Beach or walk in through private property north of Eurimbula. This is a perfect getaway destination for the self-sufficient visitor, with its undisturbed stretch of coastline. For more information telephone (079) 749 224.
The access is via the 1770 road, 6 kilometres from Mirian Vale is a signposted T junction. Follow this road for 5 kilometres and turn right at the Y junction along a gravel road until you reach the signposted park boundary. Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Mt. Colosseum forms an impressive skyline with hoop pines towering over a dry rainforest. The park is undeveloped so visitors must be self-sufficient. Bororen is a small community 13 kilometres north of Miriam Vale straddline the Bruce Highway and the main northern railway. A hotel/motel and caravan park offers refreshments and accommodation here. The main activities here are cattle and timber. Just 3 kilometres south of Bororen, take a turn across the railway line to visit Dragonhall with its fantasy tableaux.
The town is the centre of the Miriam Vale Shire and is a well known stopover on the Bruce Highway. A new visitor centre of the highway is open for information. The signs for mud crab sandwiches mirrors its proximity to the coast. Take time to turn one block off the highway and wander through the main street. Approximately 10 kilometres north of Miriam Vale take a left turn off the Highway at motel to find a cattle and horse breeding host farm.
