Sharon, South Kolan, Bucca & Smith's Crossing

Sharon, South Kolan, Bucca & Smith's CrossingApproximately 8 kilometres out of Bundaberg towards Gin Gin is the small town of Sharon. The Sharon Gorge is a further 4 kilometres along the highway. This is a tranquil area with rainforests, ferns, palms and orchids. A walkway leads down to the Burnett River.

Once again sugar cane covers the landscape with Bingera Mill heralding the town of South Kolan where the local hotel is a popular rest stop. Just past South Kolan, 27 kilometres from Bundaberg are the fascinating sandstone rock formations of the Mystery Craters which are a 25 million year old geological mystery.

From South Kolan head north to Kolan and Bucca. At Bucca the historic pub is a worthwhile stopover. From Bucca you can explore the Kolan River. Upstream is the weir and Kinagin Bridge where a boat ramp caters for small runabouts and canoes. Downstream is the Bucca Crossing with shady picnic facilities.

Some 12 kilometres further downstream is Smith's Crossing, another great picnic spot. Head towards the coast to reach Lowmead Road. A left turn will take you on to Avondale and Booyan, a right back towards Bundaberg with the option of a detour via Moore Park Beach. Take the highway to Gin Gin, which passes through North Bundaberg and rural suburbs.
