The Tanami Track, Northern Territory
The legendary stock route through the remote Tanami region starts just 20km north of Alice Springs and takes you all the way to the Kimberley in Western Australia. Universally known as the Tanami Track, in the Territory, its official name is the Tanami Road. The first 145km is sealed but, as nearly 1,000km are not, conditions can vary, especially west of Yuendumu. Be well prepared - fuel and limited services are available only at Rabbit Flat (closed Tues and Thurs) and Tilmouth Well. During the Top End's tropical summer, the road in the north could be closed depending on seasonal rains. Think twice before taking your caravan.
The Track is increasingly becoming a popular tourist route for those seeking to get off the beaten track. And, if you're planning to visit both the Top End and the Kimberley from Alice Springs, it can save you hundreds of kilometres backtracking. You can experience real life on a cattle station from Tilmouth Well or visit the ruins at the Old Granite Gold Mine, about 255km north west of Yuendumu, the original 1930s buildings and workings are worth exploring
The Tanami Desert is the traditional homeland of the Walpiri Aboriginal people, and the Tanami Track passes through Aboriginal land for much of its length. Permits are not required for travel along the Tanami Track or to visit the settlement of Yuendumu, however, permits are required if you wish to venture off the main road.
The Territory's longest running festival is held at Yuendumu, 300km north west of Alice Springs. This annual Aboriginal sports and cultural event includes football, athletics and spear throwing, corroborees and a Battle of the Bands. Visitors most welcome.
