Uluru and Alice Springs
Uluru and Alice Springs
Welcome to Central Australia, Northern Territory
The Northern Territory - there's a lot to see! And if you don't have time to explore it all this time around, you can come back again and enjoy another completely different type of holiday next time. Central Australia is Australia's heartland. You can still feel the poignant presence of the explorers and fortune-hunters as they made their way through what was for them a hostile desert. You can sense the spiritual ties Aboriginal people have with every riverbed, every rock, as you look over a land that has been breathing and evolving for 650 million years!
You'll be surprised at the number of unique animals, birds and reptiles that live in a wide range of desert habitats. Wallabies, euros, dingoes, emus, tiny gekos, huge eagles and kites, these are just some of the locals you'll see out and about during your travels.
Alice Springs is the hub of all major routes for both national and international visitors. The Stuart Highway takes you south and north through this region, with the Ross River Highway extending east and Namatjiri Drive to the west. Use Alice Springs as your starting point. You can take the highway and its off-shoots to hidden gorges, secret palm forests, meteor craters, lost cities, glass-still waterholes and sacred sites - as well as to four-star resorts, restaurants, art galleries and a casino, camel rides and balloon flights and genuine Outback pubs.
So don't just come to Central Australia to see Ayers Rock/Uluru. There is so much more to enjoy and experience in this superb and ancient wilderness. A unique and unforgettable holiday awaits!
