Natural Features of the Tennant Creek area, Northern Territory

Natural Features of the Tennant Creek area, Northern TerritoryTime, wind, rain and sun have combined over millions of years to create the spectacular scenery and unique landscapes of the Golden Heart of the Territory. The forces of nature have also combined to produce animals and plants that are unique to Australia and the region. Visitors can sight kangaroos, goannas and a plethora of birds; hunt for witchetty grubs and see plants like the Sturt's Desert Rose, the spiky Spinifex and the feathery Mulla Mullas.

But there are also the more unusual things to see, like the Bloodwood whose apple houses a female bug that never leaves her home. She eats, grows, mates and dies inside the apple. There's also the Cocroach Bush which is common along roadsides with its tall spikes of yellow flowers and flat, yellow and brown striped pods that look like cockroaches.

And there's a host of bush fruits and medicines that the Aboroginal people have spent thousands of years learning about, harvesting and using such as the Wild Tomato, with its pale yellow fruit and the Bush Banana. Bush Tucker tours can be arranged in advance with Aboriginal women.

The Aboriginal Warumungu people still maintain their dreamings and culture as they have for generations. Scientists believe they've been here for around 50,000 years, but legends suggest it could be since the dawn of time itself.
