Daly River, Northern Territory

Daly River, Northern TerritoryThe Wayside Inn and Caravan Park located halfway between Katherine and Darwin are the gateway to the Douglas Daly area. The valley nestled in behind the Wayside Inn has a natural spring and was the site for World War II market gardens. The Douglas Hot Springs are thermal pools which can be as hot as 60 degrees Celsius and swimming is recommended in the cold water pools 200 metres upstream. As well as tourists, these streams attract a variety of wildlife.

The Butterfly Gorge Nature Park was named for the large number of butterflies which sette in its cool, shady rock crevices. The sheer rock faces of the Gorge are surrounded by forest and spinifex grass. The final few kilometres are 4 wheel drive access only and the road is closed for most of the wet season.

Golloo Crossing is a popular stop on the Daly River and local lore has it that the crossing offers good barramundi fishing in the early dry with black bream throughout the year. Private camping and caravan facilities are available in the area

The Daly River is a picturesque, tidal freshwater river and is a very popular fishing area abounding with wildlife including large barramundi, fresh and saltwater crocodiles. The Daly River Crossing and Nature Park is a popular fishing and boating area and basic camping facilities are available. Bamboo Creek and Horseshoe Billabong are a naturalist's delight and home to many species of flora and bird life whilst Browns Creek is a popular fishing spot. Other features include the Jesuit Missionary Ruins, Merrepen Arts Centre and Nauiyu Nambiyu Aboriginal Community.
