Manning Point, Harrington, Taree
The Manning River is the only river on the east coast of Australia with two entrances and a delta of rich, fertile islands in between. At the northern river mouth sit Manning Point and Harrington, twin towns on opposite sides of the river, made famous in 1994 when they played host to Willy, the Tropical Whale. At Manning Point you can bide you time away on the sandy shore fishing, swimming or watching the pelicans and playful dolphins. Bowlers and 4WD enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy.
The village of Harrington may be straight across the river but is accessed from a completely different direction. Here you can stroll the breakwall watching the fishermen, eat fish and chips under the pine trees or settle into a night at the local pub or bowling club. There is ample accommodation available too.
Taree is the business and cultural hub of the Manning, a city of some 18,000 people, serving a growing regional population of around 42,000 people. While on holiday, you will find supermarkets, clothes shops and numerous other specialty stores. Downtown there are friendly owner-operated shops while uptown is a modern air-conditioned shopping centre. Taree also has an 18-hole golf course, cinema, bowling clubs, Leagues Club and numerous restaurants, spanning many nationalities. Culture lovers will appreciate the Regional Art Gallery and Entertainment Centre and there's certainly no shortage of accommodation in the town centre with reasonably priced motels every few hundred metres.
