Dalgety
Buckley's Crossing or Barnes' Crossing was the name of the general area where the village of Dalgety later stood. Situated on the Snowy River, Buckley's Crossing gained its name from the fact that the Buckley brothers drove their sheep across the Snowy River at about the spot where the bridge was later constructed. Buckley's Crossing was the only crossing in that part of the river and so became part of the main route to Gippsland. The plans for the village of Dalgety were officially approved in March 1875.
The magnificent Snowy River, one of Australia's three greatest rivers, was reduced to a trickle in the 1950s and 60s by the diversion of its water into the Murray River under the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme.
The present bridge was constructed in 1888 and in 1889 the first 30 brown trout fry were released into the Snowy River. Attempts to establish trout in Australia before this had been unsuccessful.
Today Dalgety is a quiet holiday retreat for families, fishing in the Snowy River or just relaxing during the pleasant summer season. Dalgety is only a short drive to Berridale or Jindabyne and is one of the budget character places to stay during the ski season.
