Bombala
Bombala is an Aboriginal name for Meeting of the Waters. The township is divided by the Bombala River, with the main part of the settlement being on the northern side of the river. The 1870s saw the forst two storey buildings erected in Bombala, and some of these are still standing today. In 1903 Bombala was one of the sites chosen for consideration as the future Capital City of the newly formed Commonwealth. Today, Bombala, with neighbouring Delegate, offers the ultimate in relaxation and escape. Nestled amid spectacular scenery and wildlife, these peaceful communities and adjacent villages provide a fascinating historical retreat into the bygone era of early settlers and pastoralists.
Not many towns in Australia can boast platypus in the town centre, yet a quiet evening stroll along the Bombala river bank will often reward you with the sighting of a number of these shy creatures. An early morning drive to Bombala along the Mt. Darragh Road from the coast can be rewarded with sightings of abundant wildlife including wallabies, lyrebirds, eagles, parrots, even dingoes and deer.
