Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme
No visit to the Snowy Mountains region is complete without a visit to a least one of the Snowy Scheme's seven power stations, two of which are underground. One of Australia's greatest feats of engineering, the scheme took 25 years to construct and employed 100,000 workers from more than 30 nations who braved the harsh climate and difficult terrain to create a system which today produces clean, renewable energy and provides much needed irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee River valleys.
The Snowy's Information Centre in Cooma North can provide information and make tour bookings as well as supply numerous publications and souvenirs. The Tumut 2 Power Station offers an underground tour and audio visual display and tours of Tumut 3 Power Station near the picturesque township of Talbingo are available daily. Alternatively, why not view and enjoy any of the 16 dams in the region whilst being surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.
