Welcome to the Snowy Mountains
This area contains Australia's highest mountain, Mount Kosciusko, which stands 2228 metres high, some of the best ski resorts in the country, and the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric sceme which took 25 years to build and includes 7 power stations (2 underground), 16 dams and over 140 km of tunnels. The ski season is between June and late October and once the snow melts at the end of the season fishing, bushwalking, water skiing and boating become the main activites in the area. The area is has almost as many tourists during the summer as it does in winter.
There is great variety of things to do and see throughout the year in this region including abseiling, alpine railways, berry picking, bushwalking, camping, canoeing, chairlift rides, fishing, golfing, horse riding, lake cruising, llama trecking, mountain biking, sailing, snow skiing, swimming, tennis, thermal pools, rafting, agricultural displays, alpine flowers, art galleries, mountain muster, museums, rainforests, trout farming and underground caves.
