Port Stephens Tourist Information
Welcome to Port Stephens
Port Stephens is famous for its big game fishing, oyster production and a combination of stunning coastal scenery and the appealing sandy beaches of its bays and inlets.
Port Stephens was first settled in 1824 and developed a variety of small scale industries. The natural beauty of the region, however, has stood the test of time and remained unspoilt and free from modern development. The area boasts several towns including Fishermans Bay, Shoal Bay, Salamander Bay, Tanilba Bay, Carrington and Swan Bay, each of which can serve as a base for exploring the aquatic and bushland splendour of the Port.
Boat ramps and marinas can be found throughout the area and the town of Karuah on the banks of the Karuah River is the perfect choice for fishing and boating. The Myall Lakes system is another alternative where houseboats and cruisers can be hired and the abundant wildlife in the area including dolphins and hundreds of bird varieties must not be missed.
The Tomaree and Tilligerry Peninsulas provide the visitor with a wonderful view of the Australian bush and koalas, in particular, are a popular attraction of the Port's National Parks. Be sure to visit Anna Bay which is the start of the famous immense coastal sand dune system, the largest in Australia, and of course the beautiful beaches at Bobs Farm, Nelson Bay and others are a must for the visitor.
Dining in the region is especially enjoyable with cafes, a large variety of restaurants, clubs and eateries, many specializing in locally caught seafood. The region also boasts numerous art and craft galleries, a local Theatrical Society and several places of historical interest such as Sketchley Cottage and the remnants of WWII defences at Tomaree Head. All this plus a wide choice of accommodation makes Port Stephens an ideal holiday retreat.
