Macleay Valley towns
The Macleay River is very much a part of the Kempsey Shire and provides a playground for all types of water-based recreational pursuits. The towns of Frederickton, Smithtown, Gladstone, Jerseyville, Fishermans Reach and others provide boat launching ramps and canoeing is another popular pastime along the river. Most towns in the area including Willawarrin, Bellbrook, Kundabung offer tennis and a variety of other country pursuits such as horseriding and craft, antique and old wares abound in these and other charming townships in the valley.
Surrounded by some of the most fertile land in the Macleay Valley, the peaceful twin river towns of Smithtown and Gladstone are the perfect place for visitors to while away a few pleasant hours. Located on opposite sides of the Macleay River, the towns offer shady, well grassed parks with picnic facilites such as The Gladstone Memorial Park and Pioneer Park. Country hospitality can be enjoyed at both towns and between the two, most supplies and provisions can be purchased. Tennis courts are located in both towns and Smithtown has a Bowling Club and recently restored wharf. Gladstone features a swimming pool and fine craft shops. Beautifully restored historic buildings provide a glimpse of days gone by for visitors to the Lower Macleays twin towns.
