Shellharbour
Geographically the centre of the Illawarra, Shellharbour welcomes the fisherman seeking a quiet holiday or anyone just wanting to get away from it all and be by the sea. Named for the quantities of shells to be found on its beaches, Shellharbour is bypassed by the main highways and sits on a promontory formed by the Pacific Ocean and the southern waters of Lake Illawarra. It is in a naturally ideal position for enjoying a variety of water sports in an atmosphere of rural tranquility. The Shellharbour coastline is renowned for surfing, safe still water swimming, scuba diving and snorkelling.
For travellers to the west, Shellharbour is the scenic gateway to the Southern Highlands. No other route to the high country will give you the same sense of perspective as driving past Albion Park through lush coastal lowlands, once the heart of the dairy farming industry, towards the majestic Illawarra Escarpment as it stands like a wall rising to a height of 700 metres.
