Welcome to the Macdonald Valley ...St Albans - Wisemans Ferry

Welcome to the Macdonald Valley ...St Albans - Wisemans FerryWisemans Ferry and St Albans were part of the original route to Newcastle and The Hunter. The area, first explored in 1790, is rich in early pioneer history and is a haven for historic buildings and spectacular bush and river scenery.

Wisemans Ferry is the access site for the historic Convict Trail Project where visitors can see the road now known as the Great North Road built entirely by Convict labour and as such is a permanent monument to them. using only hand tools and gunpowder, they built this road with enormous difficulties, including poor food and frequent floggings, solving engineering problems as they went. These solutions in the form of great walls with abutments and stone bridges across streams remain today.

The drive from Sydney to the north and The Hunter via Wisemans Ferry and St Albans is picturesque with strong reminders of a past gone by.
