Forster Lakes & Beaches
The twin towns of Forster and Tuncurry represent the largest urban area accounting for about half of the Great Lakes permanent population of 27,000. The surrounding villages of Coomba Park and Green Point on the shores of Wallis Lake, and the Pacific Palms area combine to provide a wealth of attractions and activities to enjoy.
A very pleasant 40 minute drive around Wallis Lake where native birds and wallabies abound, will take you to the little village of Coomba Park. This area is also easily accessed by boat. Wallis and Smith Lakes are the largest oyster producing areas in New South Wales. Fishermen flock to this area for deep sea, beach, rock, lake and spear fishing, whilst scuba diving and snorkelling attracts visitors year round. A modern boat harbour at Forster adjacent to the entrance of Wallis Lake adds to its popularity. Boat ramps, picnic facilities and a variety of scenic and dolphin cruises are also available. Smiths Lake is ideal for the whole family with warm, calm water. Swimming, boating, fishing and surfing of Sandbar Beach are all popular pursuits.
Nine Mile Beach, which stretches from Tuncurry to Halliday's Point is excellent for surfing and offers 4WD access. The beaches at Tuncurry and The Bar are also ideal for surfers and extensive grassed areas with sheltered picnic facilities, a rock pool and children's playground attract many families to the area. Forsters Beach is patrolled during the season and offers ocean baths, a kiosk and much more. The Tanks features an unusual rock formation where waves spray water continually into a protected safe swimming area and One Mile and Burgess Beaches are also a must for the visitor. Pacific Palms offers three exquisite beaches popular with surfers and families and Seven Mile Beach - part of the Booti Booti National Park, is another popular destination. Finally, The Sandbar attracts the professional surfer and provides excellent fishing.
